Starting in Villach, located on the border of the Klagenfurt- basin, where the rivers "Drau" and "Gail" flow together you have to say goodbye to Austria very soon, before the bicycle tour continues in Italy. The region Friuli-Venezia-Giulia offers a scenic variety and invites to a foray through the cultural variety of the region. This mixture of cultures reflects itself also in the cuisine: Alpine-Austrian, Slovenian and Venetian influences characterize the gastronomic offer of the region. Moving on from the peaks of the Carnic Alps, you cycle to the south side of the Alps approaching the sea, ahead of you the coast of the Adria with its miles long sand beaches. Enjoy a "slacker- day" at Grado, one of the most popular bathing resorts of Italy, before following the sea breeze you reach the former Habsburg harbour city of Trieste.
Route
Tour profile / Level 1-2:
Day 1: Villach
Individuall arrival in Villach.
Day 2: Villach – Tarvis/Camporosso, approx. 40 km
Following the river Gail you leave Villach behind and welcome Italy. In the three-nation triangle of Italy-Austria-Slovenia the valley "Kanaltal" is extending whose centre constitutes the Italian border town of Tarvis. Here Austrians, Slovenes, Friulians and Italians have been living together since hundred of years caused by the three big European language families – Teutons, Romans and Slavs – join in that region.
Day 3: Tarvis/Camporosso – Tolmezzo/Venzone, approx. 55 km
Tarvis, a small city – surrounded by wide valleys and woods – with its modern look and ancient soul, full of traditions, is your starting point of today’s cycle tour. It is not only one of the most important mountain resorts of Friuli Venezia Giulia, but it is also a winter area of this region. Continuing through the valley of "Kanaltal" you can admire the beauty of the Friuli-Alps-Region with an intact, unspoilt nature and vast, intact forests.
Day 4: Tolmezzo/Venzone – Udine, approx. 60 km
The little city of Gemona which is located on the southern exit of the valley "Kanaltal" and on the foothills of the Julian Alps is one of the most beautiful historic towns of Friuli- Venezia-Gilulia. The view of the place is characterized by the majestic dome "Santa Maria Assunta" which is surely worth seeing. The wine defines today’s stage. Hills filled with grape-vines line will be along your way and invite you to taste some drops. Udine - the city affected by Venetian ascendancies – eradiates silence and thoughtfulness; over a cup of coffee on the "Piazza" or during a stroll in the inner city you can admire the great buildings of the late-gothic and Renaissance.
Day 5: Udine – Grado, approx. 55 km
Accompanied by a breeze of the Scirocco you pass reed-landscape and water channels and arrive at Grado, a historic city of fishers and one of the most popular bathing resorts at the Adriatic Sea.
Day 6: Day of rest
You are spoilt for choice: either an exciting sightseeing-day in Aquileia on the tracks of the Romans or a relaxing day on the sea: Today you have the opportunity to discover the secrets of the Roman town Aquileia, the so-called "Second Rome"; Roman ruined cities, ancient churches and lonely landscapes on the borders of lagoons await you. Or do you prefer to enjoy your day lying in the beach chair in the lagoon with the miles long sand beaches?
Day 7: Grado – Trieste, approx. 40-70 km
The rough karst comes along with you through the back-country on the way to the Adriatic Sea. Following on a breath taking beautiful coastal area you approach your goal.
