Route
Tour profile/Level: 2
Day 1: Munich
Day 2: Munich – Bad Tölz, approx. 60 km
You will leave Munich cycling along the Isar River, a route that immediately offers you unspoilt natural settings. The river will stay your companion on the cycling path going south. (Ascent approx. 343 hm - descent approx. 208 hm)
Day 3: Bad Tölz – Maurach/Jenbach/Schwaz, approx. 68-77 km
One more day cycling will take you to the holiday region of Achensee with its picturesque mountain lake. Relax on a boat tour of Lake Achensee before you reach your hotel in Maurach by the lake. (Ascent approx. 529 hm - descent approx. 622 hm)
Day 4: Jenbach/Schwaz – Innsbruck, approx. 43-50 km
After your brekfast you cycle downhill to the Inn valley to Jenbach. From Jenbach, you will cycle along the Inn River on a well-presented cycling path to Innsbruck, capital city of Tyrol. Take a stroll through the historic town center, visit the famous “Golden Roof”, take a trip up Berg Isel with its ski-jump or the Berg Isel Museum that documents the battles that took place around the mountain under the command of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer. (Ascent approx. 90 hm - descent approx. 40 hm)
Day 5: Innsbruck – Mühlbach, approx. 55 km + Transfer
The first difficult stretch of today’s route leads from Innsbruck all the way to the Brenner Pass, national border between Austria and Italy, watershed and cultural axis, and will be completed by bus or by train. Only a few isolated buildings recall the former border clearance procedures. From the Brenner, you will cycle along the former railway line to the Fugger city of Sterzing and then on to Franzensfeste and Mühlbach. (Ascent approx. 237 hm - descent approx. 842 hm)
Day 6:Mühlbach – Niederdorf/Toblach, approx. 50-55 km
From Mühlbach, a well-presented cycling path leads through the Puster Valley, past the Mühlbacher Klause, a former border station that functioned as a gate between the provinces of Raetia and Noricum in ancient times. You will then reach the city of Bruneck, cycling along the Rienz River. The local history museum in Dietenheim documents rural life in South Tyrol with its cultural heritage and customs and is well worth a visit. From Bruneck, cycle along the Rienz River trail to Toblach, todays last stop. (Ascent approx. 720 hm - descent approx. 310 hm)
Day 7: Niederdorf/Toblach – Cortina, approx. 30-35 km
Today’s route takes you along the cycling path of the former Dolomite railway, through the Höhlenstein Valley, past Lake Toblach and the soldier’s cemetery that is a memorial of WWI. A unique panoramic view of the “Drei Zinnen” (“Three Peaks”) rock formation is coming up, followed by Lake Dürrensee. The cycle path continues slightly uphill to where the provinces of Bozen and Belluno meet, before taking you downhill, still along the former railway tracks, to the Dolomite resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo with its amazing mountain backdrop. (Ascent approx. 378 hm - descent approx. 302 hm)
Day 8: Cortina – Longarone, approx. 55 km
Yo cycle downhill and follow the former tracks, you will see the Sorapis massif on your left and the “Five Towers” (Cinque Torri) rock formation on your right. Continue south through the Boite Valley to the junction of Pieve / Calalzo di Cadore. The newly extended cycle path will take you to Longarone, a town that was rebuilt from scratch in an incredibly short period of time after being flooded by a tidal wave caused by a rockslide into the reservoir. (Ascent approx. 222 hm - descent approx. 1000 hm)
Day 9: Longarone – Conegliano, approx. 55 km
Continue along the Piave River until shortly before Belluno (an excursion to the -little Venice in the mountains- is possible), here you leave your companion and cycle along the Lago di Santa Croce, next to Lake Garda it is the second largest lake in Veneto and a popular destination for excursions because of its turquoise blue water and the sandy bathing beach. For you, however, the tour continues through historic Vittorio Veneto to medieval Conegliano. Magnificent villas and palazzi still characterise the town’s appearance today. (Ascent approx. 450 hm - descent approx. 870 hm)
Day 10: Conegliano – Treviso, approx. 50 km
Day 11: Treviso – Venezia, approx. 47 km
Following the River Sile, you cycle towards the Adriatic Sea straight to Venice (mainland) where the impressive “Serenissima“ can be admired. (Ascent approx. 50 hm - descent approx. 30 hm)
